HIGH SUMMER 2022 COLLECTION

The High Summer collection is a tribute to our long lasting work collaboration with our Indian artisanal ateliers and a celebration of the Indian handicraft techniques like block printing, Ikat weaving, sequin embroidery, Kantha stitchings and the Kalam Kari technique.

Q&A with dries

HOW DID THE HIGH SUMMER COLLECTION FIRST COME ABOUT?

It was a natural continuation of the Spring/Summer collection 22, which was very colourful, free, and festive, it was about Holi festival, it was about Burning Man, about really enjoying life and especially enjoying that freedom we have been craving for such a long time.  In addition, it was another opportunity to include that incredible craftsmanship from India. The people in India really needed the support, corona was very hard on India. In that way, for me, it was having the possibility to work with them and to see what they could do, that was really fantastic. For me, it is dreaming about a perfect summer holiday.

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE COLLECTION?

The idea was combining prints, colours, flowers, tropical flowers, leaves, sunsets, all the things which makes you think about the perfect summer and the perfect summer outfit. That mixed with handmade and hand embroidered fabrics, made completely using these beautiful techniques in celebration of Indian artistry.

A CELEBRATION OF THE INDIAN HANDICRAFT TECHNIQUES

IKAT WEAVING

Ikat isa labour-intensive handicraft technique to create specific patterns in a fabric. Ikat is done by resist dyeing sections of the yarns prior to weaving the fabric. In Ikat, the resist is formed by binding individual yarns or bundles of yarns with a tight wrapping applied in the desired pattern. The yarns are then dyed.

BLOCK PRINTING

Block printingis the process of printing patterns by means of hand carved wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing. Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method.

KALAM KARI

Kalam Kariis a combination of hand-painted and block-printed cotton textile. Mostly natural dyes are used in Kalamkari, which involves twenty-three steps, but for this collection we made sure the right color fastness was reached by using modern dyes.

KANTHA

Khanthais a centuries-old tradition of stitching patchwork cloth from rags, which evolved from the thrift of rural women in the Bengali region. We used the Kantha stitching in this collection to bond together two layers of light silk fabric.
